The Always on Location Tracking by Apple's Weather app can take a toll on your iPhone's battery life, but a couple of tweaks can improve your iPhone's performance and battery life without sacrificing the convenience of the Weather app. To rescue your battery life from the Weather app, you'll need to go to Settings first to disable Location Tracking and then pick a city to permanently display inside the Weather app. The following steps will allow you to monitor the weather and temperature near your home without the Weather apps' pesky power and performance drains, so let's get started.

Instead of opening an app, you can use Hey Siri to check the weather forecast. With a simple "What's the weather today?" Siri will tell you what to expect for the current day's weather. Siri uses the Apple Weather app by default. You can also ask about the forecast for the coming week, ask for sunrise and sunset times, or any questions related to the weather.

If you're wanting to know what the weather or temperature is in your current location or somewhere else, you can open the Weather app on your iPhone and get the current and weekly forecast. Thanks to Locations Services, you don't even need to enter your current location to get the local weather. Your iPhone will know where you are and show you what weather and temperatures to expect.

We live in an age of extreme weather, according to Science Daily, "Globally... the number of floods and other hydrological events have quadrupled since 1980 and have doubled since 2004, highlighting the urgency of adaptation to climate change. Climatological events, such as extreme temperatures, droughts, and forest fires, have more than doubled since 1980. Meteorological events, such as storms, have doubled since 1980." As weather becomes increasingly unpredictable, we need an accurate weather app to report on today's forecast, both current and hourly, as well as an extended weather outlook that includes the severe weather forecast and alerts. Since so many of us travel, we need not only local radar, but also national and global weather data so we can receive updates no matter where we are. WeatherBug is a free weather app that offers all these features; let's get started learning about my favorite weather app now, so you can decide whether or not to give it a home on your Apple device.

We’ve talked before about how to schedule Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, but did you know that certain alerts can barge right through that setting? These include AMBER Alerts (America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response), and government alerts about imminent threats, such as extreme weather. These alerts are extremely important to leave on as they can literally save lives, but you may have the occasional need to turn them off.  One recent example I can recall is when a tornado warning set my phone blaring.  My kids, dogs, and I went to the basement and were as prepared as we could be, but the alerts kept going off.  This was not helpful in my efforts to calm everyone down, and I didn’t want to turn off my phone because I was messaging friends and family to tell them we were safe.

If you want to join the rest of the world by reading your weather temperatures in Celsius, you can choose to make the switch in the Weather app. It’s a quick tap to switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius and back, but it’s hidden at the bottom of the page. And if you’re only looking at a single destination's weather, you might miss it altogether. Here’s how to change your Weather app temperature to Celsius on iPhone.

If you turn location tracking on for the Weather app, the first tab location will always show you the weather where you are. But you can also add multiple other weather locations for easy viewing in the app. Perhaps you want to see what the weather is like where your out-of-town family lives, or you’re like me and keep tabs for all the places you want to live or visit one day. Whatever the reason, here’s how to add and delete locations in the weather app on iPhone.

3D Touch, introduced with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, is still a relatively new feature and as such, more Quick Actions and Peek & Pops are being added to third-party and Apple apps all the time. Every instance where I can use 3D Touch is a welcome shortcut, and previewing a city’s weather is one of those instances. You already know that you can have multiple cities listed in your Apple Weather app, but did you know you can use Peek & Pop to preview each one? Here’s how.

As a tennis player, I often need to know when sunset will be (since the outdoor courts where I play don't have lights). Conveniently, Siri can tell me the time of sunrise and sunset. You cannot only find the time for today but also for any day of the next week. (Note, however, that Siri won't give you information for dates in the past.)

We've shown you before how to customize the Today view in your Notification Center by removing unwanted widgets and reordering the widgets you do want. But you may have noticed there's no option to remove the Apple Weather widget, which is frustrating if you've also got a widget from your preferred third-party weather app and want to remove any redundant widgets.
