Before iOS 11, the only way to lock a note in the Notes app was to tap the Share icon and select Lock Note. Now you can quickly and easily lock any note in the Notes app by swiping on it. This shortcut means you don’t even need to open a note to lock it, and it makes the whole process a lot smoother. Here’s how to quickly lock a note on your iPhone.

One of my favorite features starting with iOS 12 is the handy Measure app. Apple's measurement app uses augmented reality (AR) to function as a tape measure and level all in one. You'll be able to use this app as long as you have an iPhone SE or iPhone 6S or later. In this tip we'll go over how to use the Measure app on the iPhone and iPad to take measurements; we'll cover how to use the level feature in another tip. Let's get started learning how to use Apple's new, free Measure app.

Apple's iBooks app has gotten some major renovations with iOS 12 and is now just called Books. In addition to a new look and updated interfaces, there are lots of new features to explore including the ability to save books to a Wish List for later purchase. Let's get started learning how to save audiobooks and e-books to purchase later in the Books app on your iPhone or iPad.

If you have a child who uses your iPad or iPhone, you'll love this tip. Keeping our kids from seeing inappropriate content online can be a struggle, but with iOS 12, Apple makes it even easier to set content restrictions on your personal devices (we will cover how to use Parental Controls to set restrictions on a child's personal device in a future tip.) If you ever hand your iPhone to the back seat to keep your kids occupied on a long car ride or let them watch a movie on your iPad while you get dinner together, you'll want to read this tip to make sure they're only accessing age-appropriate material.

One of the iOS 12 features I've been eagerly awaiting is Apple's new Shortcuts app. This new app allows you to instruct Siri to accomplish a task or series of tasks with native and third-party apps, all triggered by a phrase of your own choosing. In addition to creating your own Shortcut, Apple's latest help app also lets you choose from a Gallery of pre-designed shortcuts. Let's get started learning how to find the Shortcuts app on iPhone and iPad, and then use the Gallery to install a Shortcut we all need from time to time: finding directions home. Once you've installed the driving directions Shortcut, you can choose and configure as many other Gallery Shortcuts as you need. We'll go over how to create your own Shortcut in a future tip.

Apple's new operating system, iOS 12, has a set of Screen Time features that can be used to combat smartphone and device addiction by setting app limits. There are some apps, though, that you may want to have constantly available; luckily you can choose some apps that will always be allowed in your Screen Time settings. Let's get started learning how to set Always Allowed apps on iPhone and iPad.

The iPhone's Bedtime feature is a sleep app, an alarm clock app, and a sleep tracker app all in one. Best of all, since Apple wants to help us all get a better night’s sleep, Bedtime has been included in the Clock app since iOS 10. Now, don’t panic; Alarm is still very much alive within the Clock app too, but Bedtime has the added benefit of allowing you to see how much sleep you’ll get with the sleep schedule you have, and it will also remind you when it’s time for bed each night. If you’re like me, you want to see “just one more” episode of that show you’re obsessively watching, which means you’re also going to be tired at three in the afternoon tomorrow. Let the Bedtime feature in the Clock app help you set a better schedule. Here’s how to use Bedtime on your iPhone to help you improve your sleep health.

Apple's Photos app lets you do location-based searches. Now, instead of trying scrolling through vacation pictures looking for the photos you took in a specific place, you can just search for that area, and all the pictures from that location will pop right up! Let's get started learning how to use this Photos search feature right now.

FaceTime, the Apple live video chat app, is a fun way to connect with friends and family when hearing their voice just isn't enough. Now FaceTime is getting even better with a new filter feature in iOS 12. There are lots of filters to choose from, so you'll always find something to fit your mood: a cartoon filter, a few black and white choices, and much more. Let's get started learning how to use FaceTime filters on iPhone or iPad.

Whenever I see a breathtaking landscape, my first instinct is to pull out my iPhone and attempt to capture a picture of it. So many times I’ve snapped away with my camera, brimming with excitement, only to look into my Camera Roll and find that my pictures were disappointing at best. After all, there’s only so much you can capture in a standard shot on the iPhone. Luckily, the iPhone's native Camera app can take panoramic pictures, so you don't need a special panoramic camera app or photo joiner app to stitch pictures together. Let's get started learning how to take a panorama photo on iPhone and iPad.

Apple introduced a new, useful measurement app back when it released iOS 12 that also includes a level (the Compass app no longer has a level feature). Third-party developers have long offered a level app, a tape measure app, or both, so it's great that owners of the iPhone 8 and later can now enjoy this feature for free. I've written about how to use the augmented reality (AR) tape measure portion of the Measure app in a previous tip, so now it's time to go over how to use the level feature; let's get started!

If you have an iPhone 11 Pro or an iPhone 11 Pro Max with 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, you can easily select the exact amount of zoom you'd like to use with each shot with the zoom slider. With Ultra-Wide thrown into the mix, your zoom menu has changed to make it easier for you to swap back and forth between your cameras. This iPhone tip makes a huge difference if you use the Calculator app often. Have you ever had this frustrating Calculator experience? You go to the Calculator app on your iPhone and start entering a long number, but you mistype a digit or two. Up until now, you may have thought that you had to hit C for clear and start all over. Am I the only person who wonders why Apple didn't just include a backspace button? However, while there isn't a backspace button visible, there is a hidden iPhone trick that will do the same thing. Here’s how to delete digits in the iPhone Calculator app.

Face it; kids are going to use technology as a regular part of their lives. Whether it's a home or at school, for recreation or education, or all of the above, your children and grandchildren will learn all the ins and outs of your iPhone, iPad, and whatever other devices you may have around the house. We already know it's important to limit screen time to keep our kids well rounded, but what about other parental controls? Apple has created several iPhone and iPad restriction settings that adults can put in place without ever needing to purchase a parental control app, and even more settings are coming with iOS 12! There are many reasons you might enable restrictions on your iPhone; they act like a child lock app and control major aspects of privacy, allowed content, and more. Here are two restrictions I find very helpful; preventing kids from adding or deleting apps on your devices. Let's get started learning how to use these parental control settings.

The Apple Watch Workout app is a fantastic activity tracker app. This fitness app not only tracks the duration and type of your workouts but also monitors other metrics like calories burned and distance traveled. Once your running, cardio, swimming, or other workout has been tracked, it counts towards your fitness goals for that day. But what if you forget to start a workout in the Workout app? That workout won't be included in your progress. Don't worry, though; if you forget to start a workout on your Apple Watch, you can still add the data manually later in the iPhone Health app. Let's get started learning how!

Podcasts are entertaining, educational, and free in the Podcast app, so there's a temptation to subscribe to every podcast that catches our fancy. Unfortunately, though, if the podcasts you've subscribed to are automatically downloading to your iPhone, they can very quickly eat up a lot of your storage. You can limitthere's a way to limit the number of episode from each podcast your iPhone automatically downloads, so you can stop downloading unmanageable numbers. You can even set this limit at different numbers for different podcasts you're subscribed to! Let's get started learning how to limit the number of automatic podcast episode downloads on our iPhones.
