The Notes app on the iPhone and iPad is a surprisingly useful, multi-functional tool. Whether you want to manage a project, set yourself weekly goals, or create a grocery list you won’t forget at home, it’s easy and efficient. You can add links, insert photos, include sketches, create checkable to-do lists, collaborate with others on a shared note, lock your notes for extra privacy, and more. You can see all our Notes app how-tos here.  But first, let's get started with the most basic function of the Notes app: creating to-do lists.

FaceTime, the Apple live video chat app, is a fun way to connect with friends and family when hearing their voice just isn't enough. Now FaceTime is getting even better with a new filter feature in iOS 12. There are lots of filters to choose from, so you'll always find something to fit your mood: a cartoon filter, a few black and white choices, and much more. Let's get started learning how to use FaceTime filters on iPhone or iPad.

Apple's iBooks app has gotten some major renovations with iOS 12 and is now just called Books. In addition to a new look and updated interfaces, there are lots of new features to explore including the ability to save books to a Wish List for later purchase. Let's get started learning how to save audiobooks and e-books to purchase later in the Books app on your iPhone or iPad.

Tired of wasting time on your iPhone? App Limits can help you combat technology addiction. App Limits are a feature of Screen Time, a set of tools that track and limit how much time you spend on your device in general, as well as on particular activities, sites, and apps. If you've been wanting to spend less time on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, or any other addictive app, read on to learn how to use Screen Time to set a daily limit for specific applications on your iPhone.

iOS 12 has added tons of helpful and fun new features to your iPhone's software, one of my favorite new ones is the ability to add cool effects and Animojis (and Memojis!) while taking a picture or video in the Messages app.

Have a song stuck in your head but can't figure out what it is? Starting with iOS 12, you can search for songs in Apple Music by lyrics. Even if the words replaying in your head don't include the title, there's still a good chance you'll find what you're looking for in the search results. Here's how to search with lyrics in Apple Music.

When you're planning a trip, in town or further afield, it can be a good idea to check the hourly weather forecast for your destination. You can do this in Apple Maps, which is especially useful if you already have the app open for navigation purposes.

I've been really enjoying the iOS Photos app lately, particularly the People Album. It's pretty amazing, and convenient, that the iOS Photos app can scan every face in every image, then identify people and sort the pictures into their own respective People albums. Sometimes though, the Photos app gets the identification wrong and puts a friend or family member's picture in the wrong People album. So what do you do when one of your photos has been misidentified and put in the wrong spot like this? Let's learn how to remove photos that have been put into the wrong People album.

We’ve covered how to lock notes in the Notes app on iPhone. But what if you want to remove a lock? Perhaps you locked a note for a period of time but no longer need to keep it hidden. How do you get rid of the lock on that note? Luckily, it’s just as easy to remove a lock from a note as it was to add a lock. Here’s how to remove a lock from notes on the iPhone.

The Notes app is your handy iPad and iPhone notepad and sketchpad. If you're looking for a drawing app for the iPad, look no further than the built in Notes. You can simply draw right on the note as though it were the paper. Here’s how to add inline drawings to Notes on iPhone.

Did you know you can zoom in and out using just your thumb in the Apple Maps app? Before iOS 11 you needed two fingers, which meant you generally also needed two hands—one to hold the phone and another to zoom. But now using Apple Maps is easier than ever before on your iPhone; you can hold your phone in one hand and use just one finger or your thumb to zoom in and out of maps in the Maps app. Here’s how.

One of my favorite apps for my iPhone is Apple's Photos app; not only are Apple's native Camera and Photos apps free, but they also keep improving with every new operating system. With iOS 12 and later, you can use multiple search terms to find specific pictures in the Photos app. This photo search feature can use one or more of the following categories: date, location, business name, events, people, and type of photo. I'll show you how to use this time-saving feature to search for specific pictures faster and more accurately than ever before.

Before iOS 11, the only way to lock a note in the Notes app was to tap the Share icon and select Lock Note. Now you can quickly and easily lock any note in the Notes app by swiping on it. This shortcut means you don’t even need to open a note to lock it, and it makes the whole process a lot smoother. Here’s how to quickly lock a note on your iPhone.

One of my favorite features starting with iOS 12 is the handy Measure app. Apple's measurement app uses augmented reality (AR) to function as a tape measure and level all in one. You'll be able to use this app as long as you have an iPhone SE or iPhone 6S or later. In this tip we'll go over how to use the Measure app on the iPhone and iPad to take measurements; we'll cover how to use the level feature in another tip. Let's get started learning how to use Apple's new, free Measure app.

If you have a child who uses your iPad or iPhone, you'll love this tip. Keeping our kids from seeing inappropriate content online can be a struggle, but with iOS 12, Apple makes it even easier to set content restrictions on your personal devices (we will cover how to use Parental Controls to set restrictions on a child's personal device in a future tip.) If you ever hand your iPhone to the back seat to keep your kids occupied on a long car ride or let them watch a movie on your iPad while you get dinner together, you'll want to read this tip to make sure they're only accessing age-appropriate material.

One of the iOS 12 features I've been eagerly awaiting is Apple's new Shortcuts app. This new app allows you to instruct Siri to accomplish a task or series of tasks with native and third-party apps, all triggered by a phrase of your own choosing. In addition to creating your own Shortcut, Apple's latest help app also lets you choose from a Gallery of pre-designed shortcuts. Let's get started learning how to find the Shortcuts app on iPhone and iPad, and then use the Gallery to install a Shortcut we all need from time to time: finding directions home. Once you've installed the driving directions Shortcut, you can choose and configure as many other Gallery Shortcuts as you need. We'll go over how to create your own Shortcut in a future tip.

Apple's new operating system, iOS 12, has a set of Screen Time features that can be used to combat smartphone and device addiction by setting app limits. There are some apps, though, that you may want to have constantly available; luckily you can choose some apps that will always be allowed in your Screen Time settings. Let's get started learning how to set Always Allowed apps on iPhone and iPad.

The iPhone's Bedtime feature is a sleep app, an alarm clock app, and a sleep tracker app all in one. Best of all, since Apple wants to help us all get a better night’s sleep, Bedtime has been included in the Clock app since iOS 10. Now, don’t panic; Alarm is still very much alive within the Clock app too, but Bedtime has the added benefit of allowing you to see how much sleep you’ll get with the sleep schedule you have, and it will also remind you when it’s time for bed each night. If you’re like me, you want to see “just one more” episode of that show you’re obsessively watching, which means you’re also going to be tired at three in the afternoon tomorrow. Let the Bedtime feature in the Clock app help you set a better schedule. Here’s how to use Bedtime on your iPhone to help you improve your sleep health.

Apple's Photos app lets you photo search based on location, as well as with multiple search terms. Now, instead of trying scrolling through vacation pictures looking for the photos you took in a specific place, you can just search for that area, and all the pictures from that location will pop right up! Let's get started learning how to use this iPhone Photos search feature right now.

Whenever I see a breathtaking landscape, my first instinct is to pull out my iPhone and attempt to capture a picture of it. So many times I’ve snapped away with my camera, brimming with excitement, only to look into my Camera Roll and find that my pictures were disappointing at best. After all, there’s only so much you can capture in a standard shot on the iPhone. Luckily, the iPhone's native Camera app can take panoramic pictures, so you don't need a special panoramic camera app or photo joiner app to stitch pictures together. Let's get started learning how to take a panorama photo on iPhone and iPad.

Apple introduced a new, useful measurement app back when it released iOS 12 that also includes a level (the Compass app no longer has a level feature). Third-party developers have long offered a level app, a tape measure app, or both, so it's great that owners of the iPhone 8 and later can now enjoy this feature for free. I've written about how to use the augmented reality (AR) tape measure portion of the Measure app in a previous tip, so now it's time to go over how to use the level feature; let's get started!
