Capturing special or funny moments is one of the things our iPhones do best. And sometimes, taking a video is the best way to do that, such as when you want to show friends or family the new trick you taught your puppy. But once you’ve recorded your cute video, you’ll need to attach it to a message to send it to a friend. Here’s how to attach a video to Messages on iPhone.

Read receipts notify the senders of iMessages when the recipient reads the message. This is either great or evil depending on your perspective. My colleague and his wife both have read receipts turned on on their phones. That way if a timely iMessage doesn't get read right away, they can call each other instead. Other people prefer that the senders of messages not get notified. That way there is no pressure for an immediate reply. Whichever camp you fall in, you'll need to know how to to turn read receipts on or off.

With iOS 10, Apple gave the Messages app its own App Store. You can use apps within Messages to play games, share stickers, invite friends to dinner, and more. Luckily, removing apps and stickers from Messages is even easier than downloading them. Here’s how to remove apps from messages on iPhone.

A lot of people keep asking, "can you text on an Apple Watch?" Apple Watch texting is not as convenient as iPhone texting since there's no Apple Watch keyboard. But, with WatchOS 3 and later, you can send Apple Watch messages with Scribble, send preset replies or emojis, or dictate a message to Siri. The Scribble feature allows you to use your finger to write each individual letter of your response. It’s easy, but best for shorter messages. You wouldn’t want to write a novel with Scribble messages on an Apple Watch, but you might use it to say, “OK,” or “omw” (on my way). Here’s how to Scribble messages on the Apple Watch with WatchOS 3 and later.

If you take a photo within Messages, it isn’t automatically saved to your iPhone. If you take a photo you really like, you’ll want to manually save it with this tip. It’s nice that iPhone doesn’t automatically save those photos so that you aren’t accidentally taking up too much space or saving private photos meant only for the conversation. But if you send a photo you like, here’s how to save it to the Photos app.

Do you have a person in your Contacts who you'd like to silence for a while? If you don't want to block a number, you can turn on Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone for individual contacts, although the process is slightly different with iOS 13 than it was with previous operating systems. Whether you’re on a date and don't want to hear from that one friend who texts constantly or you’re in a meeting and don’t want to be disturbed by texts, you need Do Not Disturb. Do Not Disturb mode is indicated by the crescent moon symbol or icon to the left of your selected contact, and allows you to mute texts from the person you don't want interrupting you. Here’s how to turn on Do Not Disturb for one contact on your iPhone.

Have you ever wondered how to turn off iMessage on a Mac? The first time I received an iMessage on my computer, I immediately began looking for a way to disable the feature. My iPhone tends to be right next to me anyway, so broadcasting my text messages on a Mac is definitely something I wanted to deactivate. Luckily, you can stop iMessages from popping up by simply turning off messages on your Mac. It’s actually incredibly easy to do. We've already shown you how to enable iMessages on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, how to turn off read receipts, and how to fix an iMessage waiting for activation error; here’s how to deactivate and get rid of messages on your Mac.

You can send and receive audio messages to and from other iPhone users. So if you'd like to send a clip of a concert or lecture you're attending, you can just use this Messages feature instead of killing your iPhone battery creating a video or audio recording. You can also turn on a feature that allows you to listen to those messages by simply raising your iPhone to your ear. This feature is called Raise to Listen. It can also be used when checking voicemails. Here’s how to use Raise to Listen or reply to audio text in Messages.

Finally, iOS 10 has options for people who are multilingual. Previously, your iPhone had a singular language, which meant Autocorrect would try to change French words to English, even if you were using the French keyboard. But with iOS 10 on iPhone, your Autocorrect can be multilingual and solve this frustrating problem for those who know multiple languages or are learning them. With iOS 10, you can type text in multiple languages (regardless of what keyboard you’re using) and Autocorrect will make suggestions for the multiple languages. Here’s how to have multilingual Autocorrect on iPhone with iOS 10.

The Messages app in iOS 10 on iPhone has its own App Store. While the Messages App Store is mostly stickers, there’s also apps that complement the original app available in the normal App Store. When you download an app from the normal App Store, it will automatically install the complementary Messages app. Luckily, you can turn this whole business off so that apps within Messages are only added manually. Here’s how to turn off automatically installed iMessage apps.

I try to be good about keeping my Messages app clear of unwanted texts by deleting them. There are times, though, that I receive messages from people who are not in my Contacts and I may want to save the text, but not necessarily add the person to my Contacts list. That’s why I’m glad Apple added a sorting feature to Messages. Now I can keep my Contacts and Unknown Senders separate. Once you change this message-filter setting on your iPhone, you'll see two tabs in Messages: one for Contacts and one for Unknown Senders. Here’s how to sort texts from Contacts and unknown senders in Messages on your iPhone.

Type a word in messages, and predictive text will suggest the emoji that matches that word. Many people don’t want to replace a word, even with emoji as cute or useful as the smiley face, thinking, crying, or tears of joy emoji; they simply want to include the emoji after the word. Luckily, you can add emojis to your messages without opening the emoji keyboard, then avoid replacing the word with a simple tap of the space bar. The emoji will remain in your predictive text suggestions and you can easily select the emoji to appear right after the word for it. I’ll show you what I mean below; here’s how to prevent emojis from replacing words in Messages.

Within the Messages app, you can send and receive audio messages with other iPhone users. This lets you send brief recordings of music, a voice birthday message, and more. One of my best friends and I enjoy sending audio recordings back and forth, having a full conversation using audio messages. The audio messages you send also disappear after a set amount of time unless the recipient taps Keep. Sending and receiving audio messages is a fun way communicate with your voice without being on the phone. Here’s how to send and receive audio text messages.

A while back, Apple added more racial diversity to the faces on its emoji keyboard. While none of the emoticons or family groups offer options for different skin tones, the single human characters and body parts (hands, noses, etc.) all come with the diversity options. At this point, we’ve all seen Apple keyboard emojis in all their diversity, but not everyone knows how to use or change what emoji they select. Here’s how to use the diverse emoji keyboard on iPhone or iPad.

One of the new (very odd) things you can do with Messages in iOS 10 is send your heartbeat to someone. If your loved one is concerned you’ve turned into a zombie, send them your pulse to let them know you’re still very much alive. Luckily, sending your heartbeat in Messages is quite easy to do. I’m confident this will become an important tool for the zombie apocalypse to come, because I have no idea why it exists otherwise. Here’s how to send your heartbeat to someone in Messages.
