Emoticons are the little icons created from punctuation and symbol keys and are inserted into text to indicate your mood or intention. Most desktop computer programs automatically convert symbols to graphical emoticons. For example, if you type in :-) most programs will automatically convert it to a smily face emoji symbol. iPhone keyboards automatically have a stock of emojis, but you can also download free emoji apps from the App Store. With the introduction of iOS 10, you can also add emojis to text messages by simply typing in the text field with a description of the emoji symbol you want to use. We'll go over that and more below; here's how to add emojis to text messages.

If you have an iPhone, you have the ability to send short video and audio messages right from a text message. This could be useful for sharing video or audio of where you are or what you’re doing with a friend without opening your camera or recording audio in the Voice Memos iOS app. You can even set messages you send or receive to go away after two minutes (the default) or to stick around on your iPhone for a year. (Note that this will not determine how long the messages stay on a recipient's or other sender's phone.)

In the Messages app on the iPhone, you can create group messages to keep in contact with multiple people simultaneously. You can even hold group chats with contacts that don’t use an iPhone—you just won’t be able to add anyone to a group unless it’s comprised of all iPhone users with iMessage enabled.
