Everyone hates getting email spam. Sometimes it can be more than just annoying. Sometimes spammers can collect information from your device when the email is opened. If the email contains an image, it usually is downloaded from a remote server. When you open the email, it can tell spammers that you’ve opened it and can even show your approximate location. Pretty scary huh?

Unless you have unlimited data on your iPhone or iPad, it is imperative that you use Wi-Fi whenever possible to avoid costly overage charges on your cell phone bill. You probably already use Wi-Fi at home and at friends' houses and fortunately, free Wi-Fi can also be found in public spaces, from coffee shops, to libraries, and even fast-food restaurants. Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi as well. And if you’re traveling overseas, virtually every function of the iPhone can be performed using Wi-Fi so you don’t have to pay international phone costs.

With the addition of Family Sharing came the ability for family members with separate Apple IDs to share iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases made using the same credit card. It also made it easy for parents to approve or deny a child's purchases. As long as Ask to Buy is enabled for the children in the Family Sharing Group, the parent, dubbed the Family Organizer, has total approval power over children's App Store and iTunes purchases (Ask to Buy can't be enabled for adult family members.) The Organizer can also designate a second adult to approve kids' purchases.

The Apple Watch is set to remind you to stand every waking hour for at least a minute. If you're at a desk for multiple hours at a time, this can be beneficial and add to your over-all health. However, the Apple Watch's stand sensor is not always the most accurate; many users report getting stand reminders right when they have stood up multiple times throughout the hour. Fortunately, it couldn't be easier to get that pesky reminder to shush. And whether Stand Reminders are enabled or not, your Apple Watch will continue to track how often you move.

Using your iPhone as a remote for Apple TV is super easy to set up. Apple has improved upon the Remote app for Apple TV just as it’s improved upon the Apple TV itself. You can set up the remote app for Apple TV in a few quick steps. Why do this? The major benefit of using the Apple TV Remote app is that the remote device need not be in line of sight for the Apple TV to respond. With the app you can change media from any room as long as both the device and Apple TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi. The Remote app also allows you to input text for searches from your iPhone's keyboard. Here’s how to set up the Remote app for Apple TV on iPhone.

In a previous tip, we covered how to Record Voice Memos. But once you've collected countless hours of playback on your phone, how do you share the recordings from there? Whether it's a recording of an interview, conference, or your beautiful singing voice, it's easy to share what you've recorded via email, AirDrop, or text message.

You may have had the experience of working on a draft of an email but then needing to look at a different email in your inbox. But the draft obscured the screen and couldn't be quickly pushed aside and then returned to. Fortunately, you can easily swipe away a draft, access your other email, and then quickly bring it back into view to continue working on it. This is typically referred to as "minimizing" the email draft.

Not all emails are created equal. Between spam and miscellaneous messages, there are a lot of emails we get notifications for that don't need to be checked right away. On the other hand, there are business emails and notes from family members we may want to reply to immediately. By turning on email notifications for only your VIP Mailbox in the Mail app, you'll receive fewer non-urgent notifications. Or, you can set a separate notification sound for your VIPs to differentiate between the two.

We're all familiar with the one-finger swipe and the two-finger pinch, but if you have an iPad, you may want to consider using all five fingers. Since iOS 5, Apple has added new gestures that make multitasking and navigating between apps more seamless than ever before. These gestures make it easy to see which apps are active, swipe between them, and quickly return to the Home screen.

If you travel or do business internationally, you know how costly roaming charges are. Unless your mobile carrier is T-mobile (limited to 2G data speed), you need an additional service plan for international texting. AT&T international texting costs $10 a month, as does Sprint, but don't worry; you can text free in Italy, Germany, the Philipines, or almost any other country you can think of with iMessages. With iMessage, you can text from anywhere for free, as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection and the person you're messaging also has an iPhone or Mac. If you want to be able to internationally text friends without iPhones for free, you'll need a free texting app. Let's get started learning how to avoid monstrous phone bills by sending free iMessages, or using a free text app!

Thanks to Apple's predictive text feature, called QuickType, your iOS device will suggest words that it thinks you want to use next so you don't have to type them yourself. While AutoCorrect guesses at a word, based on the letters you typed, QuickType predicts what word you might type next based on the context of your message or document. If you find QuickType's context-based suggestions creepy rather than cool, you can easily hide the feature, or you can turn it off completely. Here's how to turn off predictive text completely on your iPhone.

So you bought an Apple TV; now what? There are countless streaming network subscriptions, but what if you want to play a movie or song from your iTunes library? Welcome to Home Sharing. Using Wi-Fi and your Apple ID to connect your devices, Home Sharing makes it easy to watch the videos you own (or made) right on your TV screen.

Sometimes, you need to record a thought quickly. Using the Voice Memos voice recorder app on an iPhone or iPad to record that thought out loud is the fastest way to capture an idea before it flies away forever. The Voice Memos app is the little-known gem of the iPhone and iPad. Ease of use and clarity of sound makes the native Voice Memos app ideal for recording interviews, notes, and vocals, with the ability to record for hours at a time. If you're the type of person whose brain moves faster than your typing hands can keep up with, then Voice Memos is the ideal app for you.

The default iPad and iPhone signature in iOS Mail is "Sent from my iPad" or "Sent from my iPhone." But while some people may be happy to declare what device they are using at the bottom of every email they send, others prefer to provide other information, such as the name of the sender and additional contact information. Here's how to remove or change your email signature. This tip will let you change your signature in Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook emails sent from iPhone as well as your Apple iCloud account.

The forthcoming iOS 9 has a lot of great new features, including the News app, split-screen multitasking on the iPad, transit and walking directions in Maps, new formatting options in Notes, and a more intelligent Siri. For the first time, Apple is making a beta version (which means a not-yet-final test version) available for public download. You can use the new iOS software and report any bugs to Apple. But beware: Apple advises users not to install it on their main device because there may still be some bugs and because some of your favorite apps may not work. If you'd like to give the new software a test run, you can download it by following these steps.

What's the difference between text messaging and iMessages? Text messaging requires that you have a cellular plan while iMessages allow you to send messages using your cellular data or Wi-Fi. This is especially handy if you're travelling internationally with only a Wi-Fi connection, or if you want to send messages from an Apple device without cellular connectivity. If the message you send is blue, it's an iMessage; if green, it's a text message. Here's how to set iMessages up if you  haven't already.
